Glamping in Basilicata: Matera, Maratea and Pollino National Park in 2026
Basilicata is one of the least-told stories of mainland southern Italy when it comes to glamping, and it is still outside the top regions by search volume in our look at the global glamping market. It packs three very different experiences into one region — the UNESCO-listed Sassi of Matera, the Tyrrhenian coast of Maratea and the wild Pollino National Park — which is exactly why it remains one of Italy's least crowded areas, with 2026 prices running from about €70 to over €320 a night depending on area and season.
The best areas for glamping in Basilicata
Short answer: Matera for culture, Maratea for the sea, Pollino for hiking and wild nature. Each has its own price level and feel.
Matera and the Murge: history among the Sassi
Matera, with its cave dwellings carved into the rock and UNESCO status since 1993, is the cultural base of the region. Real glamping options are mostly in the farmhouses (masserie) and equipped camps of the Matera countryside just outside town, among olive groves and dry-stone walls, a few minutes by car from the old centre. It is a good base for combining sightseeing with downtime, at prices well below the coast.
Maratea and the Tyrrhenian coast: the "Pearl of the Tyrrhenian"
Maratea is Basilicata's only stretch on the Tyrrhenian Sea: a few dozen kilometres of rugged coast with coves, cliffs and the famous Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking the gulf. Glamping here is very limited and upmarket — only a handful of properties, often booked far in advance — with the region's highest prices, especially in July and August.
Pollino National Park: mountains and wild nature
Pollino, Italy's largest national park, straddles Basilicata and Calabria and is the place for trekking, rafting on the Lao river and ancient Loricato pines. Glamping here is simple and immersed in nature, noticeably cheaper than the coast, and cool even in midsummer thanks to the altitude.
How much does glamping in Basilicata cost in 2026?
Equipped tents in Pollino start at around €70-110 a night, farmhouses and glamping camps around Matera sit between €100 and €160, and the few sea-view properties in Maratea easily exceed €200, up to €320 in peak season. As covered in our guide to glamping costs in Europe, Basilicata as a whole remains one of the most affordable regions of the Italian south, Maratea aside.
When to go
June and September are the best months for the Maratea coast: still mild, less crowded and cheaper than August, when the limited supply sells out quickly. Pollino stays pleasant even in high summer thanks to its altitude. Matera is a good visit almost year-round, with spring and early autumn ideal for avoiding the strongest heat among the stones of the Sassi.
Getting around
Public transport between Matera, Maratea and Pollino is limited, so a car is practically essential. Distances are bigger than they look on a map — Matera to Maratea is a long drive — so most travellers pick one base and do day trips, rather than trying to cover all three areas in one weekend.
